Cobbetts LLP has received top honours for its work in exporting legal services at the 2008 Law Society Excellence Awards.

The firm’s public markets team was recognised for its outstanding achievements in the mining and minerals sector and led Cobbetts to defeat six other short-listed law firms, including two magic circle firms, to pick up the accolade for Excellence in Exporting Legal Services.  Cobbetts was recognised by the Law Society for developing a strong, international presence in the field and encouraging international investment in the UK by way of the AIM market.

The awards, which took place at Old Billingsgate Market in London last week, rewarded the most outstanding practitioners in the legal profession. Now in their second year, the awards are the one of the most highly anticipated events in the legal calendar, and are designed to recognise best practice across the entire legal profession and to celebrate excellence and achievement in the industry.

Andrew Wright, head of public markets at Cobbetts, commented: “Ten years ago, we had the idea of taking our expertise to Australia and other far-flung countries to promote the opportunities for foreign companies of listing in the UK.  We were the first to do so, but little did we realise that, a decade later, we would be acknowledged by our profession for the innovative work we do.

The Excellence in Exporting Legal Services award follows Cobbetts’ 2008 ranking by Hemscott, the independent international provider of financial data, as the UK’s leading legal adviser on AIM for basic materials.
